Abstract:
One of the primary aspects of librarianship is how quickly workflows and other aspects of our roles can and will change. Join Melissa Brooks, Michelle Colquitt, and Kayla Whitehead as they discuss change management in their new positions, whether these were changes from smaller institutions to larger ones or into positions with increasing responsibilities. In addition, we will discuss strategies we have found helpful while undergoing great periods of change. Our perspectives include a managerial perspective (Brooks), a career changer perspective (Colquitt), and a sole practitioner to team member perspective (Whitehead). This session will focus on theory versus practice in the overarching question of what we learned in library school versus the realities of working in academic libraries. As we explore this topic further, our discussion will examine change management and the growth mindset, particularly in planning projects versus their actual execution and implementation. Finally, staffing levels and their impacts on workflows will round out the discussion.
Learning Outcomes:
-Participants will discuss workflow changes in increasingly different work levels (i.e. middle management, transitioning from a smaller institution to a larger institution, as well as the change from sole practitioner to teammate).
-Participants will be able to describe Dweck’s Growth Mindset Theory in concert with the NASIG Core Competencies for Print Serials Management
-Participants will discuss the theories learned in library school versus the practicalities gained through on the job training.
-Participants will be able to discuss the impact of staffing levels on workflows
-Participants will be able to examine project management and planning in the library environment
